More Than Just a Holiday Nut

There’s quite a bit of commotion in our warehouse right now because our pecans are dusting off their dancing shoes and pulling out their party hats. It’s National Pecan Month and we intend to celebrate all month long. The Original Supernut™ in the United States, pecans have been categorized primarily as a holiday delectable for far too long. This nutrient-dense nut deserves recognition year-round, so we hope the month of April will help spotlight the versatility of pecans and secure their place in your diet on a more regular basis.

Here are just a few reasons you should consider incorporating more pecans into your diet:

  1. 30g of pecans (1 serving) contains 25% more oleic acid than one tablespoon of olive oil.
  2. Pecans contain the highest level of antioxidants of any tree nut and are the only nut ranked in the top 20 antioxidant-rich food list.
  3. Raw pecans contain no sodium, cholesterol, or gluten.
  4. A one-ounce serving of pecans contains less carbohydrates and more dietary fiber than other nuts.
Information based upon data from uspecans.com

Of course, nuts are best incorporated in moderation when reviewing your daily food intake. Consult with a medical professional if you have questions about your dietary needs.

We hope you will join the festivities this month by claiming some pecans as your own! Throughout the month of April, we are offering 20% off our Mammoth pecan halves and our honey-glazed pecans. Our halves are perfect for whipping up your favorite recipe and honey-glazed is ideal as a hostess gift or used to top yogurt, salads, and anything else your heart desires. Is the pecan pronunciation really a regional difference, as so many believe? It’s hard for us to believe that was true…in our corner of Alabama, our customers will swear by their unique versions of it.  In all fairness, it is pronounced every which way to Sunday, with PUH-KAHN and PEE-CAN taking the top two rankings. Of course, regional differences in many forms are fading with the frequency of our communities that are on the move.

What is Butter Pecan?

A key component to the butter pecan cooking process is actually roasting the pecans in butter before incorporating into your recipe, which is most likely going to be homemade butter pecan ice cream. By the way, if you are looking for a good one, try this recipe from AllRecipes.com! Some recipes will call for you to roast the pecans with both butter and sugar first – sugar is going to be added at some point during the ice cream making process, but the foundation is based upon the butter roasting step. Don’t forget that pure vanilla extract adds a bit of sweetness to any dish as well.
